For the past few weeks, DPR's Capital Projects team have been working to repair the steps from the 400 b/o P St NW that access the Bundy athletic fields. After at least of decade of neglect and after what seems to have been a semi-demolition effort, leaving the "steps" in the treacherous condition where they looked more like a law suit worthy "slide," the stairway looks much better now. There's no decorative brick or stone pavers, but the concrete steps and welcome addition of iron railing — although apparently not yet up to ADA standards — should make it easier, for most people to access the athletic fields from here on out for the students, soccer players and dog owners who use the athletic fields.
There is still some fence repair than needs to be done and the O Street side of the bundy field is in need of retaining walls to prevent further erosion, but DPR has certainly made a good faith effort to make some progress so far this year.
Update on the fence at the Kennedy Recreation Center:
Although it's been said many times before, DPR officials have renewed their promise to repair the damaged fence down the Street from the Bundy fields at the Kennedy Recreation Center at P & 7th Streets NW. It's unlikely that this will occur in time for the next CCCA meeting with Ward 2 Councilmember Jack Evans at the Rec Center on May 25. But reps from the Friends of Kennedy Playground, who will hold a meeting tonight to discuss the new water feature installment on the playground, have promised to keep pressure on the decision makers to help get the fence fixed as soon as possible.
