"We are extremely pleased to be here to celebrate this new facility located strategically at the District’s major transportation hub. This is not just a facility but a testament to the type of green transportation the District embodies and we are very proud to be part of this ribbon cutting ceremony today," said Mayor Adrian M Fenty
“Bikes are by far the best way to navigate Washington, DC.” said Stephen Marks, President of Bike and Roll Washington, DC.
Mayor Fenty also mentioned that aside from being the first BikeStation on the East Coast, it's the seventh and largest in the country and for the $96 a year membership it's an inexpensive way to stay fit. The new location will also offer full bike maintenance and service to both members and non-members of the bike station. Retail items such as locks, gloves, tubes, fenders, lights and bike computers will be available for purchase.
Gilliland and Bono discuss cycling issues with the Mayor including bike safety and the importance of completing the MetBranch trail that will link bike commuters directly to the new BikeStation. More ribbon cutting coverage here and here.
Not only can locals get bikes repaired at the station, but they can also rent bikes. Although I usually go to Georgetown where I purchased my bikes, Union Station would be more convenient. Another great spot for repairs if you happen to be pedalling out Georgia Avenue is the www.TheBikeHouse.org in Petworth which holds bike repair clinics behind Qualia Coffee at 3917 Georgia Ave NW.
