Next year: Scott Montgomery moving to Walker-Jones for consolidation

It was just announced earlier today that there is a proposal on the table to consolidate Scott Montgomery Elementary and Walker-Jones students and staff at the spectacular new Walker-Jones facility on New Jersey Avenue between K Street and New York Avenue.

There will be several public meetings in the next few weeks for parents and community stakeholders to take part in. The first meeting will be at Scott Montgomery at 5pm tomorrow, Tuesday, October 6. Letters will be sent home with students Tuesday with current information and school representatives will make themselves available tomorrow evening to answer questions and concerns. There will also be an open community meeting on Wednesday, October 21 to be held at Walker-Jones.

A final decision on this proposal will be made on December 15 by Mayor Fenty based on recommendations of Chancellor Michelle Rhee.

Principal Melissa Martin is expected to transfer in her current role to become the new Walker-Jones principal. Parents and community members are free to contact her at her dc.gov address or contact Margie Yeager at the DCPS central office via email or by calling (202) 422-5612.

Walker-Jones has a great facility that includes a DCPL Library and DPR facilities — Northwest One Recreation Center and Library Opening, November 2009 — that will compliment the school's facilities giving students the best of all worlds. KIPP:DC will have the option to move in the DCPS space at the current Scott Montgomery campus vacated by the public school.
