There were two vehicles found broken into this morning on the 1500 block of Fifth Street NW. One car had VA plates, the other DC plates. A police report was filed for one vehicle and nothing was apparently missing according to the owner.
MPD recommends that residents remind guests and visitors not to leave valuables in plain site in cars and to remove GPS devices. Some GPS devices attached with suction devices to dash board or windows, may leave residual marks on windows or dashboards, these areas should be wiped clean since even the hint of valuable items can provide thieves with the impetus to break into vehicles.
This section of 1500 Fifth Street is due to get an evaluation by DDOT to determine if an additional "acorn style" street light can be installed to help illuminate this otherwise unusually dark area at night.
Update, 1:45pm:
According to a post today on the ShawNeighborhood listserv, apparently 7 or 8 cars parked on the 400 block of O Street last night were also vandalized with windows smashed in — some had front / rear windows busted. No information available on whether or not anything was stolen.
DDOT had a representative out this afternoon investigating whether the 1500 block of Fifth St NW might benefit from having another "acorn style" street light and post installed. This process usually takes several months and these street lights usually cost a few thousand dollars to install.

DDOT inspector determines whether space would allow for another street light on 1500 Fifth St near P St, Tuesday, June 30, 2009. "Acorn style" street light can be seen in background.
