We can thank KIPP:DC and their partnership with Scott Montgomery (and the tireless work of Ward 2 Councilmember Jack Evans and his staff for helping to keep this project funded and on schedule) for the new early child development annex, the brand new playground equipment, and the amazing looking state-of-the-art gymnasium.

The inner courtyard between the old school building and the beautiful new annex will primarily serve KIPP:DC and Scott Montgomery students.

Access to the outdoor tot lot in the small courtyard on 1500 Fifth St NW will be made available to local families and age-appropriate children in the neighborhood outside of regular school hours.

The community will eventually have some access to the spectacular new gymnasium for organized and registerd events. The gym has a combination of one full-sized and two half-sized basketball courts.

The playground equipment contraction that was being installed in two locations on the Scott Montgomery campus today is due to be completed well before school starts in a few weeks. This playground equipment was installed by All Recreation of Virginia Inc.

KIPP:DC's WILL Academy is now enrolling pre-K and 5th graders. The CCCA is conducting a book bag drive for Scott Montgomery students; items will be collected at the Friends of Bundy Park event on Aug. 21.

And if that weren't enough, SME has just announced that —with the help of some extraordinary horticultural and gastronomic neighbors on 6th Street NW — they will soon be breaking ground for a fall edible and educational garden to compliment the flower beds on P St. An herb garden and a lettuce garden will be installed this year along with a pumpkin patch just in time for fall festivals. (Existing roses and canna will remain.) There will also be a worm farm and composting site. More beds and veggies will be planted for the spring. Fruit trees are also in the long term plan as well.
