Sex offender and gun offender registries

PSA 308 Lt Jefferey Carroll made an announcement and passed around a detailed flier at the MVSNA meeting last night about an additional person, listed on the MPD Sex Offender Registry, now residing on the 1500 b/o 8th Street NW. This seems to bring the total to 9 persons currently listed on the registry as living on the 1500 block of 8th St NW.

In the interest of public safety and awareness, it would be interesting and helpful to see the gun offender registry — currently being considered by the DC Council in the "Neighborhood and Victims Rights Amendment of 2010' — also made public. Residents and those looking to buy or rent in the area might be interested in knowing how many gun offenders reside in an area before they spend their money and commit to housing and bringing their families into the area. A person who is guilty of threatening, doing injury or taking the life of another person while using a gun should not be deserving of more rights and privacy than a person listed on the sex offender registry. It would be helpful if such a gun offender registry included juvenile gun offenders since they are just as likely to take away human life with a gun as an adult.

The Sex Offender Registration Act of 1999 established a sex offender registration program for the District of Columbia and authorizes the Metropolitan Police Department to release sex offender information to the public. A list of Class A and Class B registered sex offenders is provided on this website as a service to the community. The public may review the entire sex offender registry by visiting one of the Police Districts or the Sex Offender Registry Unit. Address information is provided at the block level only; no specific addresses are provided. As a result, users should note that, at times, it may appear as if multiple offenders reside at a specific address. This is not always the case. You are cautioned that information provided on this website is information of record and may not reflect the current residence, place of employment, school, status, or other information concerning the registrant (offender). Please note that unless specifically indicated, these individuals are not wanted by the police at this time. Unlawful use of this information to threaten, intimidate, harass, or injure a registered sex offender will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law."
